party image to signify 20 year in business

20 Year Anniversary

In February 2006, what started as DK Web Design began helping a small number of local businesses on the Isle of Man establish their first presence online.

At the time, websites were very different to what we see today. Many businesses were only just starting to consider whether they needed a website at all. Social media had barely arrived, smartphones were not yet part of daily life, and most websites were simple single web pages that explained who a business was and how to contact them.

Like many small businesses, it ‘all started with an idea’ and a passion to help other local businesses present themselves professionally online.

As the business continued to grow, an opportunity arose to acquire ‘IOM Web Design‘, another recognised name within the Isle of Man web design community. The acquisition allowed us to bring together two local businesses operating in the same space, combining experience, client relationships and technical knowledge under one roof.

Over time the two brands were merged and we made the decision to move forward under the IOM Web Design name. Today it remains the brand we proudly trade under and has grown into a recognised and trusted name for web design services in the Isle of Man, while also supporting clients in the UK and parts of Europe. The brand itself is now a registered trademark, reflecting the journey it has taken over the past two decades.

This year marks 20 years in business, designing and building websites and supporting businesses with a wide range of digital services along the way.

How Web Design Has Changed

When we look back to 2006, the internet was a very different place.

Back then, websites were usually viewed on desktop computers with fixed screen sizes. Mobile browsing was almost non-existent. Search engines worked differently and the focus was often simply on having a website rather than thinking about usability, speed or search visibility.

Over the past two decades we have seen the industry evolve dramatically.

Websites are now expected to work perfectly on mobile devices, tablets and large screens. Search engines have become far more sophisticated, rewarding websites that are fast, accessible and well structured. User experience has become just as important as visual design.

The way businesses attract customers online has also changed. Search engines, social media, online reviews and local search listings now all play a role in helping customers discover a business.

For web designers and developers, this has meant constantly adapting and learning. New technologies, new design approaches and new expectations from users mean that standing still is never really an option. Not moving with the times means you’ll get left behind.

The Rise of AI and New Technology

In the past couple of years we have seen another major shift with the growth of artificial intelligence tools.

AI is now being used across many industries to assist with writing, research, development and automation. In web design it can help with tasks such as content generation, image creation and even assisting developers with code.

While AI can be a useful tool and don’t get us wrong we use it as well, but it doesn’t replace experience, understanding or the ability to work with a business to understand what they really need. Just now you can’t replace the conversation the human interaction, getting to know your client and understanding their business and how you can help.

A website still needs structure, clarity and purpose. It needs to represent a business properly and speak to the people that business wants to reach.

Technology changes quickly, but the fundamentals of good web design remain the same. A clear message, a well organised layout and a website that loads quickly and works reliably are still what matter most.

Supporting Local Businesses

One of the things we are most proud of over the past twenty years is the number of local Isle of Man businesses we have been able to support.

Many of the businesses we worked with in the early days were small companies taking their first steps online. Some of those businesses have grown significantly since then, while others have moved on or changed direction. That is simply part of business life.

Over two decades we have seen many businesses come and go, especially through economic changes and shifting markets. Through all of that, we have continued doing what we set out to do in the beginning. Provide a reliable, honest and straightforward service for businesses that want a professional website without unnecessary complexity.

We believe one of the reasons we have been able to remain in business for so long is because of that approach. No exaggerated promises. No overcomplicated solutions. Just clear communication, practical advice and websites that do what they are meant to do.

A large part of our work continues to come from word of mouth and referrals, which is something we are very grateful for. Over the years we have had the pleasure of working with businesses from many different sectors across the Isle of Man and beyond.

You may notice that we do not publish long portfolios or lists of client logos on our website. That is a deliberate choice. Many of the businesses we work with value a straightforward and professional relationship, and we believe our role is to support their success rather than promote ourselves through their work.

Instead, we focus on doing good work, providing honest advice and building long-term relationships. In many cases that leads to clients recommending us to other businesses, which has always been the most rewarding way for our business to grow.

In an industry where many businesses come and go, we are proud to still be here twenty years later, continuing to support local businesses with honest advice and reliable services.

Giving Something Back

Over the years we’ve also tried to support the local community where we can.

This has included helping a number of charities and local organisations by providing website design and hosting services where possible. These groups often rely on volunteers and donations, and having a website can make a real difference to how they communicate with the public and raise awareness for their work.

Supporting these organisations is something we will continue to do where we can.

Celebrating 20 Years in Business

Reaching twenty years in business is an important milestone for any company.

To mark the occasion, we wanted to do something that reflects the way the business originally started by helping another local business take its first step online.

To celebrate 20 years of IOM Web Design, we are offering to build a completely free brochure style website for one Isle of Man business that currently does not have a website.

Many small businesses still rely entirely on social media or word of mouth. While those can work well, having your own website gives your business a permanent home online where potential customers can learn about what you do, see examples of your work and contact you directly.

This promotion is aimed at small local businesses that may have thought about getting a website many times but simply never knew where to begin.

The full design and build cost will be covered by IOM Web Design. The selected business will simply need to cover the ongoing hosting and domain renewal moving forward – check out the 20 Years In Business page and fill in the application form to be considered (this is only open to Isle of Man businesses)

Looking Ahead

Twenty years has gone by faster than expected, from the early days of simple HTML websites to today’s responsive designs, search engine optimisation and emerging AI tools, the web design industry has changed dramatically.

What has not changed is the value of helping businesses present themselves clearly and professionally online.

As we look ahead, we remain focused on continuing to support businesses across the Isle of Man and beyond with reliable websites that help them communicate what they do and connect with their customers.

And of course, we look forward to helping one more local business get their first website online as part of our 20 year celebration.

If you run a local business on the Isle of Man and currently do not have a website, you can find full details of the promotion and apply through the application form on the 20 Year Celebration page.
